Tata Motors might soon bring back one of its most iconic small cars—the Tata Nano—as a fully electric vehicle (EV). This move could shake up India’s growing budget EV market, especially for customers looking for a compact and affordable electric car. According to recent leaked reports, the new Tata Nano EV is being developed secretly and could directly compete with the MG Comet EV, which is currently priced at around ₹7 lakh (ex-showroom).

While Tata Motors has not made any official announcement yet, industry insiders suggest that the company wants to reintroduce the Nano in a new avatar with a modern design, EV technology, and smart features—all within a low price range. If this turns out to be true, it could become one of the most affordable EVs in India with impressive range and features.

Tata Nano EV Could Be India’s Most Affordable Smart EV

The original Tata Nano was launched as the cheapest car in India and aimed at making car ownership possible for the masses. Although it didn’t last long in the market due to various reasons, it still holds a nostalgic place in the minds of many Indians. With the EV revolution now picking up pace, Tata may be planning to bring back the Nano in an all-electric version to tap into the demand for small and budget-friendly electric cars.

As per leaked details, Tata Nano EV might be priced between ₹5 lakh and ₹7 lakh (ex-showroom), making it a direct rival to the MG Comet EV, which is already available at ₹7 lakh onwards. If Tata can offer better range and features at a lower price, it could attract a large number of first-time EV buyers in India.

Tata Nano EV May Offer Higher Range Than MG Comet EV

Range is one of the most important factors when it comes to buying an electric vehicle, especially in the budget segment. The Tata Nano EV is expected to come with a 17kWh battery pack that could deliver up to 315km on a single charge. This range is much higher than that of the MG Comet EV, which offers around 230km with a 17.3kWh battery.

Here’s a quick comparison of the expected specs of Tata Nano EV and MG Comet EV:

Tata Nano EV to Feature 10.3-inch Infotainment System and Smart Tech

The upcoming Nano EV may not just be about low cost and high range. Tata Motors is also planning to make it a smart city car with modern features. As per reports, the Nano EV could include a:

    • 10.3-inch infotainment touchscreen
    • Digital driver display
    • Wireless phone charging
    • Smartphone connectivity
    • Air purifier system
    • LED headlamps and tail lights

All these features can make the car attractive for today’s youth and urban drivers who want tech-friendly vehicles that are also easy on the pocket.

    Eco-Friendly Design and Compact Look

Another highlight of the Tata Nano EV could be its eco-conscious design. Reports suggest that Tata may use recycled and sustainable materials in the body and interiors to reduce environmental impact. The design might follow a boxy shape with a compact footprint, making it ideal for city driving and parking in tight spaces.

Tata might also upgrade the suspension and build quality compared to the old Nano to give the new EV better road performance and comfort. If the Nano EV retains its small size but adds smart styling and good build quality, it could appeal to many urban buyers.

How Tata Nano EV Could Disrupt the Entry-Level EV Market in India

The Indian electric car market is still new, especially in the budget category. Most EVs today are priced above ₹8 lakh, which is still expensive for many middle-class families. With the MG Comet EV already trying to tap into the entry-level segment, Tata’s Nano EV could be a game-changer if it offers more value at a lower price.

Tata is already a leader in India’s EV space with successful models like Tata Nexon EV and Tata Tiago EV. The company has the brand trust, dealer network, and production capacity to deliver a good product at scale. If they can keep the Tata Nano EV’s price below ₹6.5 lakh and offer it with long range and tech features, they may lead the market once again.

MG Comet EV Still Has Its Own Strengths

While Tata Nano EV sounds promising, the MG Comet EV already has a solid presence in the market. It is known for its:

    • Futuristic design
    • Spacious interiors despite compact size
    • 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system
    • Connected car features

However, MG Comet’s limited range and slightly higher price may give Tata Nano EV a competitive edge, especially among budget-conscious buyers.

Will Tata Nano EV Make a Strong Comeback?

So far, Tata Motors has not given any official statement or confirmation about the Nano EV. However, the leaked reports, internal discussions, and increasing focus on EVs suggest that a launch could be on the cards in the near future.

If launched, the Tata Nano EV could change the face of urban mobility in India once again, just like it aimed to do in 2008. With better technology, longer range, and affordable pricing, it has the potential to become the go-to electric car for small families, college students, and urban drivers.
